Highly Specialised Gynecological Care

Depending on a woman’s health profile, gynaecological issues may vary. Among the common gynae conditions affecting the female reproductive systems are:

  1. menstrual abnormalities (prolonged menses, painful or heavy bleeding, and irregular periods)
  2. vaginal infections
  3. ovarian cysts
  4. fibroids
  5. endometriosis
  6. vaginal dryness
  7. gynaecological cancers

Dr. Law Wei Seng’s professional interests include highly specialised gynae treatments and minimally invasive gynae surgery like laparoscopy. Laparoscopic surgery is performed on patients with early cancers, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, womb prolapse and ectopic pregnancies. As opposed to conventional surgery, laparoscopy is low risk and is performed through small incisions on the abdomen or pelvis, using a slender instrument called laparoscope. Patients who undergo laparoscopic surgery are usually able to go home within twenty four (24) to forty eight (48) hours after the operation.

We advocate a conservative approach to benign (non-cancerous) gynae conditions, and only consider surgery as an option, whenever appropriate.

Menopausal Management

Menopause marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles. Females become menopausal from their early 40s to their 50s. During this phase, a woman’s body decreases its production of progesterone and estrogen. The reduced hormonal production from the ovaries produces significant physiological and emotional changes. Menopausal women may experience hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, lethargy, thinning hair and vaginal dryness.

Our clinic offers menopause management service to treat menopausal symptoms. We use hormone replacement therapy to replace the declining production levels of estrogen or progesterone. Another available treatment is topical hormone therapy, which advocates the application of natural-based hormonal creams in affected areas.

    Women's Sexual Health FAQs

Women experience unique challenges in health care and are more likely to be diagnosed with certain diseases than men. Women’s health issues include a wide range of focus areas, such as chronic diseases, maternal health issues, urinary tract infections, sexual health, breast cancer, and osteoporosis. Hence, women’s health concerns must not be taken for granted.

Health screenings are essential in maintaining good health as one gets older. It can discover health issues early – informing you about your body condition, the risk factors involved, and the preventive measures you can take. Regular screening can also reduce healthcare costs over time.
Pelvic examinations are a part of routine healthcare. Women should have their first pelvic exam at age 21. They will be regularly scheduled depending on your age and health risks. Reasons like the family history of ovarian or cervical cancer, pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding, sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy can be grounds for a pelvic examination.
Good sexual health revolves around clear lines of communication. An excellent way to practice good sexual health is to engage in activities that make you feel sensual on your own. There is often a negative stigma around the exploration of sexual pleasure. It is totally normal and healthy to embrace your desires. Once you identify what makes you feel good, you can focus on creating healthy relationships.
General health screening tests in Singapore include a PAP smear (for 25 to 29 years old, once every three years), HPV test (for 30 years old and above, once every five years), and mammogram (for 50 to 69 years old, once every two years). Screening tests done according to individual risk profiles can include pelvic ultrasound, and bone mineral density (BMD) tests to assess bone health or detect osteoporosis.
A women’s health clinic provides medical, preventative and support services that are tailored to the health needs of girls and women. The main functions and services offered include gynae care, obstetrics, reproductive health, cancer screening and management, sexual health, and mental health and psychosocial support.
There is no single gynae condition tagged as the “most common,” but clinics and hospitals consistently highlight the several health concerns below as very common.
    • Uterine fibroids
    • Ovarian cysts
    • Menstrual disorders like dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and menorrhagia
    • PCOS
    • Endometriosis
    • Vaginitis/infections
    • UTIs
A pap smear test is primarily done to screen for cervical cancer by detecting abnormal cells in the cervix before they turn cancerous. It can identify precancerous changes early. The test can also detect infections such as human papillomavirus as well as other infections and inflammation that may affect the cervix.
The recommended frequency for Pap smear screening depends on your age:

    • Ages 25-29: It is advised to have a Pap smear once every 3 years if you are sexually active.
    • Ages 30-65: You can either continue with a Pap smear every 3 years or opt for co-testing with both a Pap smear and an HPV test every 5 years. The HPV test allows for a longer interval because it detects high-risk HPV types linked to cervical cancer.
    • Above 65 years: You may discontinue screening if you have had regular negative results in the past and you have no history of cervical abnormalities. However, if you have risk factors or a history of abnormal results, you can continue screening.
In the context of women’s health, contraception and birth control refer to the same concept: the use of methods, medicines, or devices to prevent pregnancy. Contraception is essentially the medical or technical term for birth control.
If you have been trying to conceive for more than 12 months (or 6 months if you are over 35) or if you have irregular periods, a history of miscarriages, or known reproductive conditions like PCOS and endometriosis, you can get tested at a public hospital, private hospital, or a fertility clinic. We will guide you through blood tests, ultrasounds, and other assessments to evaluate your fertility status.
You can take a home pregnancy test as early as 10 days after conception, but for the most accurate result, it’s recommended to wait until after your missed period. Some highly sensitive tests can detect pregnancy hormone (hCG) even 6 days before your missed period. For confirmation and more accurate measurement of hCG levels, you can opt for a blood test at clinics or hospitals.
The only way to know when something is wrong with your cycle is to be aware of the following signs and symptoms.

    • Your cycle length is consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
    • There is a large variation (more than 20 days difference between the shortest and longest cycles)
    • Periods lasting longer than 7 days
    • Heavy menstrual bleeding
    • Spotting or bleeding between periods
    • Excruciating pain during menstruation
    • New onset of painful periods after childbirth
    • Significant mood changes
    • Breast tenderness
    • Bloating
    • Acne
    • Fatigue
    • Symptoms of hormonal imbalance (e.g., weight gain, acne, sleep problems)

Consult a gynae immediately if you experience any of the above signs.
