What is fertility treatment?
Fertility treatment is the medical care used to help a person or couple conceive when pregnancy hasn’t happened naturally. It ranges from simple measures through to assisted reproduction. Simple measures include identifying your fertile window, correcting hormone imbalances or treating conditions like PMOS (Previously Known as PCOS). Assisted reproduction includes intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The right approach depends on the cause, your age and how long you’ve been trying.
Importantly, fertility treatment does not always mean IVF. A large proportion of couples conceive after a proper assessment and targeted, less invasive treatment. The goal is to find the simplest effective path for your situation, not to jump straight to the most complex option.
When should you see a fertility specialist in Singapore?
See a fertility specialist if you’re under 35 and haven’t conceived after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse. Seek help after 6 months if you’re 35 or older, because fertility declines more steeply from the mid-30s. If you’re over 40, or already know you have a relevant condition, it’s wise to seek help as soon as you start trying.
You should also consider an earlier assessment if any of the following apply:
- Irregular, very painful or absent periods (possible ovulation disorder, PMOS or endometriosis)
- A known diagnosis of PMOS (Previously Known as PCOS), endometriosis, uterine fibroids or blocked fallopian tubes
- Two or more miscarriages
- Previous pelvic surgery, pelvic infection, or a history of chlamydia/gonorrhoea in either partner
- Known issues with sperm count or quality, or male sexual/ejaculatory difficulties
- Undergoing cancer treatment, or planning to, and wanting to preserve fertility
Seeing a specialist early does not commit you to IVF. Often it simply gives you clarity and a plan.
Common causes of fertility problems
Fertility involves both partners, so a good assessment looks at both. Causes generally fall into three groups.

Fertility treatment options explained
1. Fertility assessment & fertility testing
The essential first step. A structured work-up identifies whether the issue is ovulation, the womb or tubes, sperm, or a combination. That way treatment targets the real cause instead of guessing. For many couples, the assessment alone reveals a simple, fixable problem.
2. Ovulation induction & timed conception
For women who aren’t ovulating regularly (common with PMOS), medication can help stimulate ovulation, combined with ultrasound tracking to time conception. This is one of the least invasive and most cost-effective treatments.
3. Treating underlying conditions
Conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and polyps can reduce fertility. Treating them can restore your natural chance of conceiving or improve the success of later treatment. This is often done with minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, a particular area of Dr Law’s expertise.

Fertility treatment cost & government support in Singapore
Costs depend on the treatment and whether it’s done at a public or private centre. As a guide, a full IVF cycle in Singapore is commonly quoted in the region of S$13,000 to S$20,000 before subsidies. Public AR centres such as SGH give a similar estimated range of about S$15,000 to S$18,000. Simpler treatments such as ovulation induction or IUI cost considerably less. Fertility assessment and consultation are more modest. A specialist consultation is typically in the S$150 to S$250 range.
Government co-funding
Eligible couples undergoing assisted conception at public AR centres can receive up to 75% government co-funding, for up to 3 fresh and 3 frozen cycles. Key conditions: at least one spouse is a Singapore Citizen, the couple is assessed as clinically suitable, and the woman is below 40 at the start of the cycle. Up to 2 of the co-funded cycles are allowed at age 40 and above if assisted reproduction or IUI was attempted before 40. Co-funding applies at public AR centres, not private clinics. MediSave
Singapore Citizens and PRs can use MediSave, their own or their spouse’s, towards assisted conception at both public and private AR centres: up to S$6,000 for the first cycle, S$5,000 for the second, and S$4,000 for the third and subsequent cycles, subject to a lifetime cap of S$15,000 per patient.

Do both partners need to be assessed?

Will seeing a fertility specialist mean I have to do IVF?
